Recipe Alert!

Andy and I have been cooking a lot lately…well, scratch that, I’ve been cooking a lot lately because I’m a control freak, and Andy has been offering “Mmmm” sounds and occasional suggestions. He does the dishes every single time, though!

But I realized that we haven’t updated our Recipe Page in forever, so I wanted to let you know that it’s now officially happened. While I wasn’t able to put up recipes to EVERYTHING, I did add some of our favorites.

VegVeggieReception 300x199 Family (vegan) dinner night

It doesn’t have to be this fancy!

We’ve recently instituted “Family Dinner Night,” which just means that at least once a week, we’re going to commit to put our busy schedules aside, and cook/eat an actual meal together. At the table. Usually with candles. That way, I can’t claim that me eating Chocolate Soft Serve on the couch, watching Breaking Bad, while Andy eats his third round of General Tso’s tofu and cookies counts as a dinner.

I will, however, maintain that the Chocolate Soft Serve, while seemingly decadent, is actually ONLY BANANAS. No sugar, no nothing. Although I guess some might argue that two and a half bananas do not constitute a meal. Whatever. It’s delicious.

But it’s been fun! We’ve been experimenting more with vegan cooking, which has broadened our food horizons astronomically. And I keep getting more and more comments from people about how they’d like to be vegan/vegetarian, but don’t know what to cook.

Let me tell you, neither of us are chefs. All of our recipes are relatively easy, include ingredients that can be found in regular grocery stores, and are super duper healthy—I don’t cook with oils or much fat, and I prefer to use whole foods.
So check it out!

If you want, we can have a vegan dinner party!

VegNYCtrip1 Its up to you, New York, New Yooooorrrrkkk

Clockwise: Soft Serve Fruit Co. dark chocolate cone; Le Pain black bean hummus & avocado sandwich; Candle Cafe seitan burger; Le Pain apple tart

I owe an apology to my wife.

Sara, I’m real sorry, but I think I cheated on you on Saturday. With the seitan burger at Candle Cafe.

candle cafe logo 300x300 Its up to you, New York, New YooooorrrrkkkI lusted for it like its name was Gomorrah.

You see, Sara and I took a day trip to New York City over the weekend, as we like to think we’re the kind of people who take day trips to New York City over the weekend. Other than taking in the sights,1 we really love New York City trips because it’s our best opportunity to get all the animal-free food we can handle.

Eating vegan in New York City is as easy as, well, eating non-vegan in York, PA. Everywhere you go, there’s some dairy-free ice cream or a vegan-friendly menu that labels everything. It’s fantastic, although that’s hardly news.

Still, I couldn’t help but share my lustful experience with that Candle Cafe burger. Candle Cafe is one of those vegan meccas you kinda need to hit up if you’re living this lifestyle (Candle 79 being its upscale sister). The burger was made of seitan2, and I added tempeh bacon and tapioca cheese. I am not being facetious when I say it might have been my favorite burger ever.3

And that was all thrown in with an impromptu lunch at Le Pain Quotidien, where we had a black bean hummus and avocado open face sandwich and a vegan apple tart, and a visit (or two) to Soft Serve Fruit company, which will make you swear out loud.

It was a completely nerdy vegan trip. We even got T-shirts with “Kale” and “Seitan” written on them. Being vegan, I’ve discovered, has made me love food.

  1. Skyscrapers! Art! Half-naked men shaving in the street! []
  2. Pronounced say-tan. Not Satan, although wouldn’t that be fun? “Mmmm. Satan tastes so good. []
  3. And to those who say, “I want real bacon”, I’d like you to watch this. No, seriously, go do it! I’ll wait. Actually, I’ll buy you a bacon cheeseburger if you’ll watch the video while you eat it. That’s not propaganda. That’s actually what happens before you eat it! You wonder why I get so passionate about this stuff. []

Sanctuary12 768x1024 Visiting Poplar Spring Farm Animal Sanctuary

Sara and Andy at Poplar Spring Farm Animal Sanctuary with Aggie the Cow

Sara and I visited Poplar Spring Farm Animal Sanctuary as part of Sara’s birthday weekend. If you’ve never been (it’s in southern Maryland), go. Right now.

PoplarSpringCollage 300x300 Visiting Poplar Spring Farm Animal Sanctuary

It’s the kind of place that reminds you what farm animals are really like- calm, friendly, and pleasant. It’s not the horror images you associate with factory farming – that’s not how animals naturally are, just how they are when they are in horrible conditions.

And it’s not the faceless thing you see on a dinner plate – the animals have personalities and love affection. Sara may or may not have tried to smuggle some animals home. Vegan or not, you’d enjoy yourself.

The owners and founders, Terry Cummings and Dave Hoerauf, are just amazing. They created the sanctuary 15 years ago because they wanted a place for cows to live out their lives instead of heading to a slaughterhouse, something they saw up close after growing to love some cows that had been living near their house and then seeing them shoved and beaten onto a cattle trailer.

And now the sanctuary has grown to 200 farm animals, all of which have either been rescued from an abusive situation or managed to flee a livestock truck. Terry gave us a tour and she knew every single animal’s story. It’s one of the few sanctuaries of its kind in the entire country.
